The new materials library is an extension of the studio space now rather than a separate entity. The addition of a large centralized work surface will aid in the process of choosing your materials and finishes for future projects.

New Workstations

The new workstations are now almost complete. Students will now have much more functional personal storage space and ample room to maneuver around their desk areas. The overhead storage is just low enough to maintain the openness of the space and still promote communication between students while working in the studio.

NEW BATHROOM

One of the bathrooms has now been almost entirely gutted. We will change the floor level and fixture layout in order to make it more accessible. This bathroom will also be equipped with new low-flow fixtures in order for us to do our part in conserving water.

NEW CEILING INSTALLATION

Furring channels, a framing component used for the new ceiling assembly, were installed in order to apply sheet rock onto the concrete slab and beams. Our goal was to clean up the ceiling’s design by creating a smooth white surface to refine the look of the entire space. This will also help to reflect more light than the previous popcorn ceiling and will make the entire studio feel much brighter.

NEW DUCTWORK INSTALLATION

Our new HVAC system is not only more mechanically efficient but it is also more visually pleasing than the previous layout. It works with the structure of the building and new design concept.

Specific areas of the ductwork have a flexible lining (black material that can be seen inside the ducts in some of the images) which serves many purposes. It serves as an acoustical barrier and also reduces the amount of energy lost while hot or cold air travels through to the vents. Another characteristic of this lining is that it reduces the amount of condensation to keep mold, mildew, and other bacteria away while improving the overall air quality of the space.

NEW WORKSTATION MOCK-UP

The millworker has created a full scale, mock-up section of the new workstations The worksurface material used is manufactured by "Richlite." This "indestructible," charcoal colored solid surface material began its life as a material used to build skate parks. It is created by bonding layers of paper together which are then soaked in resin and cured in stages. During manufacturing the layers gradually bond to create an extremely durable surface that still maintains the natural look of stone. The base and shelving will be built with "Appleply," a premium quality birch/alder veneer core panel. A clear coat of water-based polyurethane will be applied to protect the surface and maintain the natural color of the wood and exposed edging.

New wood flooring has been installed and the walls are being laid out. The beams and slab are being prepared for new sheetrock as well.
